Video: Fun classroom maths activities for learning algebra

In today’s video, Mathematics teacher Holly Millican shares three fun classroom activities she uses to help engage her students in learning algebra: Solve Me Mobiles, Digit Disguises and Colour by like terms.

‘Algebra is one of my all-time favourite topics to teach because there are so many teaching techniques which can be utilised to help students really increase their critical and creative thinking skills, and really engage that algebraic style of thinking with students and really increase students’ algebraic thinking skills,’ she shares in the video.

Holly runs through an example of each activity and explains how she has differentiated them in her own classroom.

Introducing Digit Disguises, invented by David Butler, Holly says: 'This activity was recently introduced to me by a colleague and I was immediately enthused by the potential that this activity had to really engage students; not only their algebraic thinking skills but also their logic.'
