  1. A Career Education and Development Framework and measure for senior secondary school students. This 2023 paper reports on the testing of a career education and development framework with senior secondary school students. The research involved testing the framework using data from 2 independent studies. ‘These two studies provide career practitioners, teachers, administrators and researchers, with a conceptual framework and a measure that could identify and report on the career education and development of students in Grades 10, 11 and 12 at individual, class, grade, school and system levels,’ the paper concludes.

  2. Best-practice career education for students from low socioeconomic status backgrounds. This 18-month study investigated best-practice initiatives in career education for primary and secondary students from low socioeconomic status (SES) backgrounds in order to understand how young people from low SES backgrounds make decisions about their educational and vocational futures, and establish overriding principles to guide career education provided to these students. Five key themes emerged from the research which informed 5 recommendations.

  3. A whole-of-rural-community approach to supporting education and career pathway choice. This study focused on key influencers for students when considering their post-school pathway options – families, teachers and employers – and sought to answer the question: How can a whole of community approach best equip key influencers to inform and support rural student post school pathways? The findings suggest that rural community-researcher partnerships can be effective in equipping these key influencers with the confidence and knowledge to inform and support education/career pathway choices for students.

  4. Understanding the value of pre-apprenticeships. The National Centre for Vocational Education Research (NCVER) presents an evaluation of the value of pre-apprenticeships in delivering improved apprenticeship outcomes in this paper. Findings from their research support the effectiveness of pre-apprenticeships in improving apprenticeship outcomes; however it was also found that their impact varies according to student characteristics and training type.

  5. Careers education in Australian schools: Who has access? This data story reports on careers education and activities that Australian students have access to. Surveys were conducted with 259 schools, and findings show 95% had one or more specific careers staff at their school and over 70% report visits from universities and taking students to visit universities to explore course options.

Teacher published an infographic sharing more detailed findings of this research, including the supports available for students related to further study options and how the employment of a school career counsellor influences a school’s confidence in their ability to meet students’ need for career and further study advice.
